Life Beyond Netflix 8 Free Streaming Platforms

Life Beyond Netflix  8 Free Streaming Platforms

The current range of platforms to watch series and films is practically unattainable. If an audio-visual addict wants to stay up to date with all the latest news, the cost of streaming service fees can be quite high. But if our goal is not to be up to date but simply to enjoy the content that we find interesting, there is an alternative that we often overlook: the free and legal platforms that are financed through advertising. They are smaller and less well-known, but they are gaining importance: in the United States, the HBO platform, which is immersed in a process of economic cuts, has begun to sell the rights to some of its best-known series to services of this species, known as free ad-supported streaming (FAST). This business model, which until now was residual, is infecting the most popular platforms. Both Netflix and Disney+ have already launched cheaper rates that include advertising at the start and during the broadcast of their content.

FAST platforms are an important market segment of the United States market – according to the consulting company Comscore, in 2022 there was a 29% increase compared to 2020 of homes connected to these services – and they have made a dent here as well. Let's take a look at which free platforms we have in Spain and what kind of content we can find there.

8 Free Streaming Platforms

Free and without registration, but with advertising. Pluto TV, which is part of the Paramount group, is the major reference in the market (it is present in 30 different countries). Its operation is twofold: on the one hand, it offers 100 channels that broadcast live like any other television service, and, on the other, it has a section of on-demand content. It is a good platform to find, for example, classic BBC literary adaptations that are impossible to see on other paid services (hopefully they are on Filmin), such as North and South, miniseries based on the novel by Elizabeth Gaskell, or the remake of Up and Down. You can also have access to multiple seasons of Doctor Who(from the fourth to the ninth of the modern stage). Beyond series, you'll find a handful of movies. Of course, if you like to consume fiction in its language, you will find a problem, since all the content is offered dubbed in Spanish and without the option to switch to the original version.

Pluto TV can be accessed through its website (www.pluto.tv) or through the application, compatible with Android and iOs. Also available for Samsung Smart TV, Amazon Fire TV, Apple TV, and Chromecast.

One of the most recent additions to the world of free platforms is Runtime, which began operating in September 2022. There is also no need to register – although the service gives the option – of paying. Once the user enters the page, they will find 10 linear broadcasting channels that follow a thematic criterion, grouping the contents by genres such as action, comedy, or classics. In addition, to live channels, it also has over 1,000 titles on demand. As a curiosity, it has an agreement with TVE that allows it to have two thematic channels dedicated to two vintage hits of public television: Ana y Los Siete and Curro Jiménez.

As for its technology, it also has its own application available for Android and iOS. The service is also compatible with Amazon Fire TV, Apple TV, and TVs with the Android operating system.

What is different about RTVE Play compared to other platforms of other open television channels? In addition to offering the content, they broadcast live, as would any other on-demand service from a channel, the platform of the Spanish corporation also allows access to Spanish and European series, some of which have been seen on other platforms, such as the French Call my agent or Hippocrates. Through RTVE Play you can also access the contents of RTVE Playz, the laboratory of programs and series for younger people. One of the elements that differentiate RTVE Play from, for example, the 3alacarta application is its functionality, which is much more

Of all the free options, Plex is certainly one of the most attractive and comprehensive in terms of catalog. It can be used by creating a user account, although it is not essential. It has an offer of 200 live channels and 50,000 on-demand titles between series and movies organized not only by genre but by other categories such as Most Popular Content or Saying Goodbye Soon, a quite useful separator if we don't want to find the unpleasant surprise that what we wanted to see is no longer available. Unlike other services, there are original versions available here. Among the interesting titles you can access are the series Boss, starring Kelsey Grammer, or the version of Donetesfrom the BBC in 2017, with Maya Hawke as Jo March.

Art. Tv

This platform is specially designed for users interested in the world of culture. Available in six languages, Arte.TV, which does not include advertising, is a European platform that began in 1992 with the intention of spreading the cultural wealth of the continent. According to the service, co-financed by the European Union, 56% of its programming is documentaries; 19% are cinema and fiction films; 14% are news programs, and 5% is music content and live shows. In addition, two-thirds of the programs it offers are unreleased. Rummaging through the on-demand content catalog you can find, for example, a series of short documentaries that offer us a journey around the world through well-known characters: from Finland by Tove Jansson, creator of the popular Moomin,

The Arte application is integrated into smart TVs from brands such as Samsung, LG, Panasonic, Sony, and Toshiba. It can also be downloaded for Android and iOS mobile devices and is compatible with Chromecast and Apple TV. It can be used both with and without registration.

Tivify is closer to a free live TV option than a content-heavy streaming platform. In its free version, which includes advertising, you can watch more than 150 live channels, you can make recordings of up to 60 hours (available for 30 days), can have access to the programming of the last seven days of RTVE and all autonomous channels, and three connected devices. Tivify has three payment methods that allow more devices to be connected.

Rakuten TV works similarly to Plex TV. Since 2019 this platform, which also has a paid subscription part and a movie rental part, has been offering free movies and series with ads. Its free catalog is much more interesting in terms of movies than series, although you can find original productions such as Matchday, the docuseries that reviews the 2018/2019 Barça season, or Campeones, focused on women's football and with the participation of Alexia Putellas, among others. In fact, sport is one of the main threads in Rakuten's catalog, as it also offers original documentaries focused on figures such as Ona Carbonell or Seve Ballesteros. It should be noted that some of Rakuten TV's free content can also be viewed through Plex TV, which offers several live TV channels under this brand.

Viki depends on Rakuten TV, but its uniqueness is that it has specialized in Asian content, especially in Korean dramas, one of the strongest trends in the audiovisual industry today. Once you enter the web, its series is organized according to country of origin – South Korea, mainland China, Japan, Taiwan, and Thailand, mainly –, genre and type of access, i.e. whether it is free content or not The contents are in the original version but have subtitles. Of course, you will also find advertising here. The platform can be a true paradise for K-dramas lovers and a good alternative if you have already watched all the Korean series that Netflix has to offer.
